    The Quicker One is the Better One? − How to Fight Negative Word of Mouth

    With the rising popularity of online social networks it became much easier for firms to spread viral messages for marketing purposes. But on the reverse side, negative messages can also spread much more easily and may harm the reputation of a firm severely. Therefore, we investigate how firms can react on negative word of mouth in online social networks with the help of positive word of mouth. For this, we develop a novel diffusion model that incorporates several new aspects: the aging of a message, the content of a message, the change of opinion, the delay between the negative message and the firm\u27s reaction, and different kinds of markets. Results show that a firm is better off when reacting with a carefully designed message even if it takes some time instead of reacting quickly or with multiple seeds but with a message of lower quality

    Live-Stream Shopping is Landing in Germany: An Analysis of the Stickiness Intention of German Customers

    Live-stream shopping (LSS) has emerged as a highly profitable social commerce phenomenon that revolutionizes the retail industry in recent years. Especially COVID-19 reinforces this trend. However, research in LSS is still in its infancy. The current study sheds new light onto live-stream shopping in Europe, particularly Germany, as a first study. It analyzes the perceived value and the communication process between the retailer and the customer. Particularly the communication process has not been investigated in this context before so that new theoretical and empirical insights are provided. The results show that German customers’ stickiness is more driven by the functional than the hedonic value. Moreover, the influence of retailers’ social presence differs among younger and older customers

    What Drives Decision Makers to Follow or Ignore Forecasting Tools - A Game Based Analysis

    Using forecasts is a prerequisite for good decision making but often decision makers ignore the outcomes of forecasting tools and rely solely on their personal assessment of the decision situation. On the one hand, this usually leads to worse decisions in comparison to situations where the forecast was considered. On the other hand, forecasts can also be defective. If so, decision makers are well advised not to use the forecast. Thus, it is crucial that they do not rely blindly on forecasts but scrutinize critically the results. The question is under which circumstances decision makers follow or ignore forecasts. To answer this question, we conducted a laboratory experiment where decision makers have the choice between two alternatives. The forecast provided gives an advice which alternative to choose. The forecast is manipulated so that it is only partly reliable. Results show that participants do not act optimally. If they are blinded by their success or experience several failures over time that they are not responsible for, they tend to rely on the manipulated forecast instead of calculating their own more accurate forecast

    Different Prices for Different Customers – Optimising Individualised Prices in Online Stores by Artificial Intelligence

    Today’s information tracking technology and Big Data open up new opportunities for e-commerce. Online stores can collect personal information to estimate customers’ willingness-to-pay. This enables the application of price differentiation where different customers are charged different prices for the same product. Lower prices offered to customers who share the word have an advertisement effect, while higher prices have adverse effects. In this paper we develop a decision model for individualised prices in online stores that considers the sharing of prices by word of mouth which is mostly neglected by current literature. Complex decision models in e-commerce are caught between the need of adequately representing the reality and the demand of being solvable within reasonable time limits. We use various artificial intelligence solution methods to solve the decision model for numerical examples. Our results indicate that despite word of mouth differential pricing can be financially worthwhile

    Human perceptions of fairness: a survey experiment

    Algorithmic decision-making (ADM) through automation has benefits but must be implemented responsibly. Several mathematical definitions of fair outcomes exist, but it remains unclear how these align with human perceptions of fairness. We conducted a survey experiment (N=258) examining common machine-learning definitions of fairness (demographic parity, equal opportunity, and equalized odds) in the context of algorithmic job interview invitations. We find that humans perceive the simple fairness definition of demographic parity as less fair than a more complex one that considers whether the invitees were eligible

    DIGITALIZATION OF LOCAL OWNER OPERATED RETAIL OUTLETS: THE ROLE OF THE PERCEPTION OF COMPETITION AND CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS

    On the one hand, the increasing digitalization of commerce has put local owner operated retail outlets (LOOROs) under pressure to adapt their business models to the new technological and competitive environment as well as to the changing shopping habits of their customers. On the other hand, it also offers potential competitive advantages for them. This paper investigates the retailers’ perception of the competition and their perception of customer expectations, combined with a survey of the current use of digitalized services and the LOOROs readiness to increase the usage of digitalized services. Our results confirm that the perception of competitive pressure and customer expectations has a positive influence on LOOROs’ readiness to adopt new technologies and business models. But a significant number of the surveyed retailers underestimate the expectations of their customers and are reluctant to add digital services to their business portfolio. While our key findings are relevant insights for all LOOROs on their journey towards digitalization, our findings provide even more significant insights for all digital service providers aiming to take a slice of the still substantial market shares of LOOROs in rural areas

    Local Shopping Platforms – Harnessing Locational Advantages for the Digital Transformation of Local Retail Outlets: A Content Analysis

    Competitors and customers put Local Owner-Operated Retail Outlets(LOOROs) under digitalization pressure. Local Shopping Platforms (LSP), acting as intermediaries between LOOROs and their customers, explicitly make use of the locational strength of LOOROs and seem to be a promising vehicle to help LOOROs overcome their manifold digitalization difficulties. In this study, with the help of a structured content analysis of 27 LSPs in Germany, Switzerland, and the U.S., we analyze LSPs as local descendants of e-marketplaces and derive a functionality-based typology. Furthermore, we scrutinize how LSPs harness LOOROs locational advantages. Despite their visible role as interorganizational service-hubs and a low-level entry option to e-commerce for LOOROs, our results show that LSPs currently unduly focus on location-enabled services that support the online channel, while neglecting the potential of location-based services and the local stores as a Point of Sale (PoS)

    Antimicrobial use in pediatric oncology and hematology in Germany and Austria, 2020/2021: a cross-sectional, multi-center point-prevalence study with a multi-step qualitative adjudication process

    Background Due to the high risk of severe infection among pediatric hematology and oncology patients, antimicrobial use is particularly high. With our study, we quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated, based on institutional standards and national guidelines, antimicrobial usage by employing a point-prevalence survey with a multi-step, expert panel approach. We analyzed reasons for inappropriate antimicrobial usage. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted at 30 pediatric hematology and oncology centers in 2020 and 2021. Centers affiliated to the German Society for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology were invited to join, and an existing institutional standard was a prerequisite to participate. We included hematologic/oncologic inpatients under 19 years old, who had a systemic antimicrobial treatment on the day of the point prevalence survey. In addition to a one-day, point-prevalence survey, external experts individually assessed the appropriateness of each therapy. This step was followed by an expert panel adjudication based upon the participating centers’ institutional standards, as well as upon national guidelines. We analyzed antimicrobial prevalence rate, along with the rate of appropriate, inappropriate, and indeterminate antimicrobial therapies with regard to institutional and national guidelines. We compared the results of academic and non-academic centers, and performed a multinomial logistic regression using center- and patient-related data to identify variables that predict inappropriate therapy. Findings At the time of the study, a total of 342 patients were hospitalized at 30 hospitals, of whom 320 were included for the calculation of the antimicrobial prevalence rate. The overall antimicrobial prevalence rate was 44.4% (142/320; range 11.1–78.6%) with a median antimicrobial prevalence rate per center of 44.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] 35.9–49.9). Antimicrobial prevalence rate was significantly higher (p < 0.001) at academic centers (median 50.0%; 95% CI 41.2–55.2) compared to non-academic centers (median 20.0%; 95% CI 11.0–32.4). After expert panel adjudication, 33.8% (48/142) of all therapies were labelled inappropriate based upon institutional standards, with a higher rate (47.9% [68/142]) when national guidelines were taken into consideration. The most frequent reasons for inappropriate therapy were incorrect dosage (26.2% [37/141]) and (de-)escalation/spectrum-related errors (20.6% [29/141]). Multinomial, logistic regression yielded the number of antimicrobial drugs (odds ratio, OR, 3.13, 95% CI 1.76–5.54, p < 0.001), the diagnosis febrile neutropenia (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.06–0.51, p = 0.0015), and an existing pediatric antimicrobial stewardship program (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.15–0.84, p = 0.019) as predictors of inappropriate therapy. Our analysis revealed no evidence of a difference between academic and non-academic centers regarding appropriate usage. Interpretation Our study revealed there to be high levels of antimicrobial usage at German and Austrian pediatric oncology and hematology centers with a significant higher number at academic centers. Incorrect dosing was shown to be the most frequent reason for inappropriate usage. Diagnosis of febrile neutropenia and antimicrobial stewardship programs were associated with a lower likelihood of inappropriate therapy. These findings suggest the importance of febrile neutropenia guidelines and guidelines compliance, as well as the need for regular antibiotic stewardship counselling at pediatric oncology and hematology centers.
